oats  (rolled oats, porridge oats)
water or milk
salt
cream

My father used to soak his breakfast porridge overnight. Then cook in the same water stirring for about 10 minutes. Serve with milk or cream and salt.  You can make it with milk instead of water.

My husband makes his in the microwave. He lets it soak for a short while then cooks for 4-5 minutes in the microwave. He uses a cup of water and 2/3 cup of oats for a large bowl.  He eats it with lots of salt and creamy milk.

Nowadays people add jam, dried fruit, honey or maple syrup. Husband was recently offered in a hotel a nip of whisky!

I personally can't abide the stuff! There's something about the texture that makes me grue. (fills me with disgust)

Morag says
Scotts porridge oats
three quarters a pint of cold water
2 teaspoonfuls salt,
three quarters a cup of porridge oats
bring it to the boil keep stirring turn down heat and simmer for a few minutes,   enough for two good platefuls
