Chocolate cake

This recipe came from Calton farm in the late 1940s.   Tested by Elaine Corbett.

Ingredients for one cake:
4 oz self raising flour
2 oz drinking chocolate
3 oz soft margarine
2 oz caster sugar
1 tablespoon golden syrup
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon boiling water
2 eggs

Method:
Beat margarine, sugar and syrup until creamy then beat in the eggs.
Fold in dry ingredients
Add a small amount of hot water if needed to obtain a soft dropping consistency.
Put the mixture into an 8 inch round sandwich tin lined on the bottom with greaseproof paper.
Bake in a moderate oven 180°C (150° fan) for about 20 minutes or until the cakes are slightly shrunken from the sides of the tin, and springs back when pressed lightly on the top.

Double the quanties to make two and sandwich the two cakes together with whatever filling you like, or sprinkle with kirsch and fill with stoned cherries and whipped cream for that Black Forrest gâteau taste.
